A silent protest in Love Park, downtown Philadelphia orchestrated by performance artists protesting the murder of Michael Brown in Ferguson. The onslaught of passerby’s  wanting to take photos with the statue exemplifies the disconnect in American society.  Simply frame out the dead body, and it doesn’t exist.

Here are some observations by one of the artists involved in the event:

I don’t know who any of these folks are.

They were tourists I presume.

But I heard most of what everything they said. A few lines in particular stood out. There’s one guy not featured in the photos. His friends were trying to get him to join the picture but he couldn’t take his eyes off the body.

"Something about this doesn’t feel right. I’m going to sit this one out, guys." "Com’on man… he’s already dead."

There were a billion little quips I heard today. Some broke my heart. Some restored my faith in humanity. There was an older white couple who wanted to take a picture under the statue.

The older gentleman: “Why do they have to always have to shove their politics down our throats.” Older woman: “They’re black kids, honey. They don’t have anything better to do.”

One woman even stepped over the body to get her picture. But as luck would have it the wind blew the caution tape and it got tangle around her foot. She had to stop and take the tape off. She still took her photo.

There was a guy who yelled at us… “We need more dead like them. Yay for the white man!”

"One young guy just cried and then gave me a hug and said ‘thank you. It’s nice to know SOMEBODY sees me.’

I’m just gonna keep reblogging this because this is truly how white America works. Like people have their weddings on plantations, Blackface was and still is a major source of entertainment and the biggest movie of all time was Gone With the Wind. White America will kill Black people and then smile and laugh and enjoy their day it sickens me that we’re treated this way.

Except this is their vacation and this is like, the picture you take when you are a tourist in Philadelphia. Do this in front of the liberty bell and you’d see the same thing. I bet a lot of these people will never get to be in Philly again & simply wanted this iconic picture. Just like taking a picture in the bean in Chicago, or by the Eiffel tower. Would you really forgo these pictures just because a protest was going on? No.

Them wanting to take a picture in front of the Love sign, like hundreds of tourists do every day in the summer, despite a protest is normal.

There are like way more important things going on than photo ops LIKE what is happening in Ferguson. Fuck Love Park I can’t believe you just compared that dumb shit to the Eiffel Tower. Arguably one of the most important yet underexposed/discussed aspects of Philly’s history is it’s foundations in slave labor. And shit, if you go to visit Washington’s slave quarters, the building they’ll show you is not even located where the actual slave quarters were. They moved it so they could more conveniently locate the Liberty Bell. Slaves actually slept where a bunch of whiny ignorant tourists sit their asses down to eat cheese steaks. Philly is a fantastic place to do a protest like this, and Love Park is a great location because people will see it. It will raise awareness, which is realistically what protest are all about. Get outta here.

I never said Love Park, or Philly, isn’t a good place to protest. Just that’s it’s wholly unsurprising and doesn’t say much that tourists are still taking pictures with the (yes, overrated) Love sign in Love Park. So, maybe you get out of here before you decide to try talk shit to me or put words in my mouth.

Nah, what you said was insensitive and I’m pretty sure most decent people would forego the photo op in that scenario, so it was also unrealistic. Would YOU stand over a posed dead body to get a picture with the Eiffel Tower? That seems excessively entitled. Your tone and arguments implied that you were defending the tourists. Gooooodnight.

I just. People nowadays have no empathy what so ever.

I was getting ready to upload a new VCH with a BVLA Miro Modena (photo 1) and I thought it would be fun to look back over the last year of photos and see how many “BVLA ladies” I could find.  Tumblr limits posts to 10 photos so I guess that’s where we’ll stop :)

If you were EVER going to treat yourself to a REALLY special piece of jewelry, I can’t think of a better way to do it.

All piercings by Leo Ziebol. All fancy tops by BVLA. All ti curves by Anatometal

Ok, so personally I like Leo, but several of these ends look like they would be horribly uncomfy in the piercings they were put into. I really don’t understand how another piercer hasn’t called this out.

This is a great example of the “it’s gold so it’s ok” disease that has spread among piercers.

No, it’s not OK, just a very expensive discomfort for the client.

Luis I totally disagree. All of these ends have soft edges and are appropriately sized.

Stating that these pieces are not only inappropriate but reckless is just silly.

But thanks for speaking up. It would be a shame for people to go on thinking this was a good idea…
